Am I Done?

I received a notification recently that a password had been changed on a client’s website. I hadn’t made the change, so I reached out to ask about it. The client confirmed they had been updating passwords, and everything was fine.

That situation got me thinking, and of course analyzing. There were three steps in there, and too often, I automatically assume number three is mine.

Noticing something. Investigating it. Taking responsibility for resolving it.

In this case, I noticed something that might have been a problem. I followed up to find out what had happened. And once I had confirmation that the change was authorized, I realized there wasn’t anything else I needed to do.

Sometimes I let those three things run together. If I notice something, I feel like I need to investigate it, which I think is defensible and part of my job. But then if I investigate it, I can start to feel responsible for whatever comes next. But that’s not necessarily the case.

Sometimes noticing something and asking the right question is exactly, and all, that I need to do.

Last week, I noticed that I’m spending less time asking, “How do I rank this page?” and more time asking, “How would someone actually ask this question?” It’s a subtle shift, but it changes how I think about websites. I’m finding myself looking for ways to make sites easier for both people and AI to…

What I noticed last week: Some weeks are not built for big moves. I had a couple of days where the best choice I could make was to stop at a good point, instead of pushing through just to feel productive. A small update. An hour of bookkeeping.Leaving something for tomorrow on purpose. It doesn’t look…

  • Before Hitting Reply

I caught myself getting irritated by an email this week. Someone asked me to add information to a website… that was already there. My first reaction was, well, not kind 😄 Fortunately, I didn’t respond immediately. After a short cooling down period, I wondered if maybe I’d misunderstood what she wanted. Maybe she was looking…

Things I noticed last week: I’ve spent a long time, probably years, trying to make time blocking work. To be fair, a lot of successful people swear by it, and I can absolutely see why. If your days are fairly predictable, blocking time for important work makes a lot of sense. The problem is that…

Things I noticed last week: Sometimes the thing causing my stress isn’t the delay. It’s that I keep thinking about the delay. I was waiting on information from a client and found myself getting increasingly annoyed. Not because I needed it that minute. Not even because the information was late yet.I was annoyed because I knew…

What I noticed last week: Sometimes the things that feel small to me are a really big deal to my clients. Last week, we updated a photo and created a simple graphic for a client event promotion. Technically, it wasn’t a huge project. But it gave her an easy way to share her event details,…
