What’s Next?

Things I noticed last week:

Sometimes the thing causing my stress isn’t the delay. It’s that I keep thinking about the delay.

I was waiting on information from a client and found myself getting increasingly annoyed.

Not because I needed it that minute.
Not even because the information was late yet.
I was annoyed because I knew they were going to be late.
😁

Eventually I picked a day on my calendar when I would bring it up again if needed, and decided what I’d do with the information whenever it arrived.

Oddly enough, that solved most of my problem.

Nothing had changed.

The information still hadn’t arrived.

But I had stopped carrying the reminder around in my head.

Sometimes maybe deciding what you’ll do next is enough to let the rest go.

Last week, I noticed that not every productive week looks “productive.” There weren’t any big client wins or dramatic technology problems to solve. Mostly, I was getting ready for WordCamp US – making decisions, finishing loose ends, and trying to be intentional about how I want to spend my time there. It felt… ordinary. But…

What I noticed last week: Some weeks are not built for big moves. I had a couple of days where the best choice I could make was to stop at a good point, instead of pushing through just to feel productive. Someone needed some information, and while I couldn’t really solve the problem for them, I did have something that I thought might help. So I made a little extra effort to get it to them. They were…

  • Inconvenient Systems

What I noticed last week: I was in an informal webinar where website security was the hot topic – specifically, how small businesses can protect themselves and their clients. The honest answer I heard was a little unsatisfying: there is no magic fix. You do what you can, reduce risk where you can, keep backups…

  • Through Their Eyes

What I noticed last week… One of the easiest traps for me when designing a website is forgetting that I already know where everything is. I know the organization. I know the terminology. I know how all the pieces fit together. The person visiting the site… doesn’t. I’ve found that some of my best design…

What I noticed this week: I had a homepage update sitting with a small committee.Nothing was wrong – it just hadn’t landed yet. I left it alone for a few days. This morning I came back with one option and a simple question:“How about this – if it looks good, I’ll post it.” They both…
