Inconvenient Systems

What I noticed last week:

I was in an informal webinar where website security was the hot topic – specifically, how small businesses can protect themselves and their clients.

The honest answer I heard was a little unsatisfying: there is no magic fix. You do what you can, reduce risk where you can, keep backups in place, and make recovery easier if something goes wrong.

My takeaway was that some of the most useful protections are also the least exciting ones.

Updating plugins.
Turning on two-factor authentication.
Using stronger passwords.
Being thoughtful about using personal devices for work.

None of that is groundbreaking. Most of it feels pretty annoying.

But a lot of business protection seems to live in those small, unglamorous habits.

Sometimes the strongest systems aren’t built on dramatic moves – they’re built on the consistent, inconvenient ones.

What I noticed this week: I had a homepage update sitting with a small committee.Nothing was wrong – it just hadn’t landed yet. I left it alone for a few days. This morning I came back with one option and a simple question:“How about this – if it looks good, I’ll post it.” They both…

Things I noticed last week: I’ve spent a long time, probably years, trying to make time blocking work. To be fair, a lot of successful people swear by it, and I can absolutely see why. If your days are fairly predictable, blocking time for important work makes a lot of sense. The problem is that…

  • Both People and AI

Last week, I noticed that I’m spending less time asking, “How do I rank this page?” and more time asking, “How would someone actually ask this question?” It’s a subtle shift, but it changes how I think about websites. I’m finding myself looking for ways to make sites easier for both people and AI to…

It’s easy to think productivity means pushing harder….

Here are my four biggest takeaways: 1. Our jobs are changing, not ending. The future of AI isn’t in better prompts, but in better coworking. It’s learning…

  • Opportunity Ready

Last week, I noticed that not every productive week looks “productive.” There weren’t any big client wins or dramatic technology problems to solve. Mostly, I was getting ready for WordCamp US – making decisions, finishing loose ends, and trying to be intentional about how I want to spend my time there. It felt… ordinary. But…
