Clear Questions

What I noticed this week:

I had a homepage update sitting with a small committee.
Nothing was wrong – it just hadn’t landed yet.

I left it alone for a few days.

This morning I came back with one option and a simple question:
“How about this – if it looks good, I’ll post it.”

They both replied right away – with a different idea.
I made the adjustment, and the update was live within minutes.

For me, creating something small and clear for them to react to made all the difference.

Last week I was reminded how easy it can be to unintentionally add friction to someone else’s problem. Someone needed some information, and while I couldn’t really solve the problem for them, I did have something that I thought might help. So I made a little extra effort to get it to them. They were…

  • Opportunity Ready

Last week, I noticed that not every productive week looks “productive.” There weren’t any big client wins or dramatic technology problems to solve. Mostly, I was getting ready for WordCamp US – making decisions, finishing loose ends, and trying to be intentional about how I want to spend my time there. It felt… ordinary. But…

Things I noticed last week: I’ve spent a long time, probably years, trying to make time blocking work. To be fair, a lot of successful people swear by it, and I can absolutely see why. If your days are fairly predictable, blocking time for important work makes a lot of sense. The problem is that…

  • Both People and AI

Last week, I noticed that I’m spending less time asking, “How do I rank this page?” and more time asking, “How would someone actually ask this question?” It’s a subtle shift, but it changes how I think about websites. I’m finding myself looking for ways to make sites easier for both people and AI to…

Things I noticed last week: Sometimes the most advanced troubleshooting step is still:turn it off and back on again. A router reset fixed the internet.A short break fixed a problem I’d been staring at too long.A conversation that felt stuck suddenly made sense after stepping away overnight. It’s easy to think productivity means pushing harder….

  • Our Work in the World

What I noticed last week: Sometimes the things that feel small to me are a really big deal to my clients. Last week, we updated a photo and created a simple graphic for a client event promotion. Technically, it wasn’t a huge project. But it gave her an easy way to share her event details,…
