Slightly More Capable

I feel like there’s a certain kind of learning nobody really talks about when you run a business.

Not the exciting kind.

Not the “I took a masterclass and now I feel inspired” kind.

I mean the kind where your calendar doesn’t sync correctly, you can’t find an email you know you’ve seen, a security setting suddenly matters, or you spend an hour figuring out why someone else can’t see an updated webpage.

Some days may feel less like “growth” and more like life repeatedly handing you tiny puzzles you didn’t ask for.

And here’s the funny/not funny part:

Apparently, a surprising amount of modern business ownership lives in those tiny moments.

Not just the work itself, but the systems surrounding the work.

The logins.
The platforms.
The notifications.
The updates.
The settings you didn’t know existed until something stopped behaving the way you expected.

Sometimes it feels like every tool is supposed to “save time,” while quietly requiring you to become a part-time expert in ten other things just to keep everything moving.

A few years ago, most people running small businesses probably weren’t spending their afternoons learning about two-factor authentication, troubleshooting calendar visibility, or figuring out why a browser cache is showing an older version of a page.

Or maybe they were, and I’m just catching up.

Now, for all of us, it’s just part of the landscape.

And honestly, especially as a Gen-Xer, I think there’s a certain emotional exhaustion that comes from constantly adapting to systems that keep changing around us.

Not catastrophic exhaustion.

Just… accumulation.

Tiny bits of friction.
Tiny decisions.
Tiny interruptions.

The kind that don’t seem important on their own, but still take up real mental space by the end of the day.

At the same time, I’m also realizing something I probably wouldn’t have appreciated a few years ago:

Maybe… I can adapt to this too.

Maybe… modern business ownership is simply becoming slightly more capable than you were the week before.

And maybe… that counts for more than we give ourselves credit for.

Not every lesson feels meaningful in the moment.
Some of them just feel annoying.

But somewhere inside all those tiny modern puzzles, capability is quietly being built anyway. And while I may not be enjoying every lesson right now… I can already tell Future Debby is probably going to be grateful I learned it.

Good ideas are everywhere. You hear one at a conference. Someone shares what’s working for them in a Facebook group.
