Making Room

Good ideas are everywhere.

You hear one at a conference. Someone shares what’s working for them in a Facebook group. You read a post on LinkedIn, listen to a podcast, or have a conversation with another business owner and think, Oh. That’s a really good idea.

And it might be. The tricky part is what happens next.

Because somewhere between recognizing a good idea and deciding what to do with it, it’s easy to skip an important question: Is it a good idea for me?

Someone else may have found a great new way to market their business. A service they added may be doing incredibly well. They may have found a tool that saves them hours every week, or changed the way they work and wondered why they didn’t do it years ago.

None of that means I need to do the same thing.

That can be surprisingly hard to remember, especially when I’m surrounded by smart people doing interesting things. Curiosity is one of the ways I learn. I want to know what people are trying. I want to understand what’s changing. I want to hear about something I’ve never considered before. I don’t want to lose that.

But being curious about an idea doesn’t mean I have to turn it into an assignment.

I can listen to someone describe a service and think it’s brilliant without adding it to my own. I can learn about a new tool without immediately changing the ones I already use. I can admire the way someone else has built their business without deciding mine should look more like theirs.

Sometimes a good idea fits exactly where I’m headed. Sometimes it changes the way I think about something. And sometimes it’s simply a good idea that belongs to somebody else.

Maybe that’s the distinction worth holding onto. The question isn’t only, Is this a good idea? It’s also, Does this good idea fit what I’m actually trying to build?

I can wander around, look at what other people are doing, ask questions, and learn something new. I just don’t have to make room for every good idea.
