Through Their Eyes

What I noticed last week…

One of the easiest traps for me when designing a website is forgetting that I already know where everything is.

I know the organization. I know the terminology. I know how all the pieces fit together.

The person visiting the site… doesn’t.

I’ve found that some of my best design decisions come after I stop looking at the site through my own eyes and start trying to look at it through theirs.

Does it make sense?

Is it intuitive?

Do related things naturally connect to each other?

If someone knows nothing about this organization, can they still find what they came for?

Last week was a good reminder that designing a website isn’t just about putting information online. It’s about making it easy for someone else to understand.

Things I noticed last week: Sometimes the thing causing my stress isn’t the delay. It’s that I keep thinking about the delay. I was waiting on information from a client and found myself getting increasingly annoyed.
